1930s Oscar Schmidt/Antoria Faux Resonator
Made in the Oscar Schmidt factory in New Jersey in the 1930s this faux resonator guitar has survived well over the last 90 years. We have seen a few of these early catalogue faux resonator guitars but never one that actually plays and certainly never one in such good condition. Yes, it does have quite a few marks on the body (mainly to the shoulders/sides) but the frets and fretboard are in great condition and the neck is nice and straight with decent low action. The resonator plate and tail piece are very shiny with none of the usual pitting and rust marks. No idea where the "Antoria" branding comes from and certainly not linked to the Japanese Antoria brand introduced in the 1950s.
This is no wall hanger though - It may not sound like a resonator (it has no cone) but it does provide a lovely vintage blues tone, with just a hint of metal twang. And the guitar comes complete with a period correct hard case, which has all 3 latches working and with the interior blue felt in great condition. This guitar has clearly been well cared for over the years – a great fun collectors piece.
