We do get to play some amazing instruments here in the shop but this one has really stood out – from that first chord you can tell this is a special guitar.
The 1944 Gibson Banner J-45 stands as one of the most historically significant acoustic guitars ever produced, representing both Gibson’s wartime ingenuity and the birth of the modern folk guitar sound. These instruments were crafted during World War II when material shortages forced Gibson to innovate, creating what many consider the finest-sounding J-45s ever made. The distinctive “Only a Gibson Is Good Enough” banner headstock logo makes these guitars instantly recognizable and highly coveted among collectors and players alike. Within this already coveted group of instruments, the rare “Hogtop” models occupy a very special position. Built during the crucial wartime period (1942-1945) with unique material constraints Gibson made some J-45s with Mahogany tops instead of the customary Spruce. This, paired with the Mahogany back and sides gives the guitar a warmer, slightly darker, tone – sounds so good.
This 1944 J-45 is all original and in pretty good shape. The top does have plenty of lacquer cracking/crazing (see the last 7 pictures), however the back and sides are relatively clean with the back devoid of the usual buckle rash. The frets and Brazilian Rosewood fretboard are in great condition - it has clearly had a refret at some point. Not much room left on the saddle but the action is spot on and the guitar plays great right across, and up and down, the fretboard. The guitar also comes complete with a good quality 70s hard case.
Might be a long time before we see an acoustic guitar a special as this in the shop again……
