1970s Knight Jumbo Acoustic
Dick Knight was a renowned British luthier known for his exceptional craftsmanship in guitar making. He co-founded Knight Guitars with Gordon Wells in 1967 - together, Wells and Knight would grow Knight Guitars to be one of the preeminent British workshops specializing in both repairs and restorations as well as the bespoke building of acoustic and electric guitars for the English market. Jimmy Page, Pete Townshend, Mike Oldfield and Andy Fairweather-Low are among the many British guitarists who continue to be fans of the work executed at Knight Guitars. Dave Gilmour’s Knight acoustic sold at auction for $56k.
We have no information on who this guitar was originally built for – the build quality is superb and the all solid wood construction is very typical of Knight guitars, with highly figured, honey coloured Maple for the back and sides, and a Sitka Spruce top. The Mahogany neck has a 25 ½” scale Ebony fret board with a distinctive “flat” heal connecting it to the Jumbo body that has a 16” lower bout.
The guitar is in great condition although it does have a few small marks on the top and back as you would expect with a guitar of 55+ years of age. Setup with a brand new set of Dragon Skin 12s the guitar comes complete with a period correct Japanese made hard case that is missing one of its original 4 latches, but still works as it should.
There is no information available as to how many guitars Dick Knight built, however these guitars rarely come up for sale and are still extremely sought after.
