1980 Gibson ES-175D
With a fully hollow body and sharp Florentine cutaway, the Gibson ES-175 stands out as an all-time iconic jazz guitar. The ES-175 has seen some variation over the years, with different pickup and hardware configurations coming in and out of the Gibson line-up. Although the ES-175 is noted as a jazz guitar, favoured by the likes of Pat Metheny, Joe Pass, it has also been embraced by rock players like Yes' Steve Howe who has a signature model.
This fantastic natural finished example is a 1980 ES-175D model, with the “D” part of the model name indicating the use of two pickups – in this case 2 x Gibson pat number humbucker pickups. The 3 ½” deep body and top are laminated maple, with the top reinforced with two parallel braces. The neck is 3-piece maple with a Brazilian Rosewood fretboard with the classic double parallelogram inlays. The original hardware includes “Witches Hat” control knobs, trapeze tailpiece and the Tune-o-Matic bridge on a rosewood base – the machine heads have been changed to a set of Schaller tuners. This Norlin Era Gibson guitar really is in great condition considering it is over 45 years old, with only some light wear on the treble side of the neck, 2 tiny marks on the top and 2 marks on the back to show for its years (see last 3 pictures) – the guitar comes complete with its original tan Gibson hard case.
