1982 Gibson Chet Akins CE
The Gibson Chet Atkins CE (Classical Electric) is a single cutaway classical guitar with built-in electronics and rosewood fretboard.
In his never-ending quest for feedback-free high-volume playing, Chet Atkins had his say in the design of many instruments over the course of his career. The Gibson Chet Atkins CE was introduced in 1981, and enjoys the distinction of being the first solid body classical to see large-scale production. Chet was using nylon strings quite a lot by the late 1970's and early 80's, and worked with Gibson to create the solid spruce over mahogany CE. This is the model that Mark Knopfler played it on stage for the Love over Gold tour - used on Private Investigations and Love over Gold , and also in the outro of Romeo & Juliet.
The guitar features a piezo-crystal pickup design, thin solid body with cut-away, traditional classical trimmings, and a rosewood fretboard. This is a very early Custom Shop Edition example from 1982. It has had a neck break and repair at some point in its past – the repair has been carried out very well with the break area smooth to the touch. Other than the neck break the guitar is in really good, all original condition. There are a few marks to the top (see last 3 pictures) but the back and sides are pretty much mark free. There is also a mark on the 1 st position on the fretboard – again smooth to the touch. The guitar has been setup with a new set of Augustine Reds and comes complete with its original rectangular Gibson tan leather hard case with green plush interior.
