2000 Gibson Custom L-5 CES
The Gibson Custom L-5 CES is an iconic hollow body jazz guitar renowned for its rich, warm tones, meticulous craftsmanship, and the historical legacy of talented players who have used it.
Originally introduced as an acoustic instrument in 1922 under the guidance of Lloyd Loar, the Gibson L-5 was Gibson's first guitar with f-holes and a carved archtop, designed to enhance projection and tonal clarity. Initially used as a rhythm guitar for big band jazz, the L-5 grew from a 16-inch body to its classic 17-inch width by 1934, with a Venetian cutaway added in 1939. In 1951, Gibson electrified the model, creating the L-5 CES (Cutaway Electric Spanish) by fitting it with two pickups and built-in electronics, while retaining its carved spruce top and maple back and sides.
This 2000 model is in fabulous condition with only some very very light play wear to show for its 26 years – even the gold finish to the hardware lacks the usual tarnishing. The guitar comes with no paperwork but it does have its original tan Gibson hard case, which is lacking its combination latch. W ith vintage and Custom Shop models produced in very limited numbers each year, the Custom L-5 is one of the most exclusive Gibson archtop jazz guitars .
