There's certain special crispness, clarity and volume that you only find in Old Selmers – and this AJL Model XO, however the AJL is comfortable to play, easy to tune, has better workmanship, better woods and a stable construction that you can trust in professional use. It has that Selmer sound and feel in a new guitar that sounds and feels like old.
The Spruce top on this XO guitar is like old aged tonewoods, thanks to the modified heat treatment process called Thermotimber. If you've seen any vintage Selmers, you may have noticed, how the old nitrocellulose finish has shrunk and there's hardly any varnish left. In order to reduce vibrating mass, the coating of Model XO is also very thin. It's made of shellac – like violins – and topped with a very slight amount of matt nitrocellulose. Top plates are sanded uneven to maximise the vibrating area and strengthen the neck joint region. Finally, the extremely stable carbon-fiber reinforced neck ensures that all the energy from the vibrating strings go straight to the soundbox, instead of being absorbed by a flexible neck.
The back and sides of the guitar are made from figured Brazilian Rosewood with the same aged finish – the guitar looks like it is indeed 90 years old rather than only 15 years old. There is one small mark on the bass side shoulder, although difficult to know if this is part of the aged look…. The Walnut neck has an Ebony fretboard, zero fret and a 670mm scale length. The AJL tailpiece and tuners are in the classic Selmer style, and have aged treatment.
