Product Details

The L-1 was first introduced by Gibson as an acoustic archtop in 1902, and later as a flat top in 1926. The L-1's design was revolutionary at the time, featuring a carved arched top and back that allowed for greater projection and sustain. The model is famously associated with the legendary bluesman Robert Johnson.

This 1920 L-1 has a single bound spruce top with a bound round sound hole with double 5 ply sound hole rings. The back and sides are Mahogany, all finished in a Sheraton Brown finish. As can be seen in the photographs the guitar is in fantastic condition, especially considering it is 105+ years old. There is some light buckle rash on the rear, a small mark to the side, a small mark to lower treble side of the top and some very light indentations to the lower bass side of the top which looks like they might be cufflink marks (see last 4 pictures). The mahogany soft V profile neck has a Rosewood fretboard and is joined to the body at the 13 th fret. The fretboard and frets are in great condition with the frets looking like they have recently been levelled and dressed. The guitar is all original with its “The Gibson” headstock logo, the Rosewood floating bridge, trapeze tailpiece with pins anchored in tortoise celluloid plate and open back machine heads. The original scratch plate is included with the guitar, however it has lost its celluloid bracket piece. The serial number on the label is really diifcult to read, however the FON of 11331 is still clearly stamped on the heel block.

The guitar has been setup with a new set of Elixir Phosphor Bronze 11s and comes complete with its original case – externally the condition of the case isn’t quite as good as the guitar but the original handle and all the catches are all present and working – inside of the case is still in really good condition.

Over the years, the L-1's legacy has been kept alive through various reissues and vintage models, making it an enduring icon in the world of acoustic guitars. This, however, is a great opportunity to own, and play, one of the original models - in superb condition, a real collectors piece.
