Product Details

Produced from around 1960 through to 1964 as an alternative single pickup version to Hofner's longer lasting 500/5 model. Both these large bodied basses were not initially marketed at all strongly by Hofner in Europe, unlike Selmer in the UK who had the 500/5 in their catalogues from around 1958 onwards and the single pickup 500/3 from 1960. They were not even included in the main Hofner European price list until 1961.

Early 500/3 bass guitars had a 2 ½” body depth, 21 frets and a rectangular console. This 62/63 model was one of the last built before it changed to the Senator Bass in 1964. In common with the Senator Bass it has a narrower 2” body depth, 22 frets and the rotary volume and tone controls.

The bass has been refurbished, and whilst it lacks some original hardware the guitar is in really good condition with only a few small marks to show for its 63+ years (see last 3 pictures). The headstock facia has been completely redone, finished in a matt black with a gold Hofner decal; The pots have been replaced with modern CTS pots; the tuners, nut and bridge have been replaced with modern Hofner parts and it is missing its scratch plate. The rest of the bass is original, including the Hofner staple pickup which has been rewound.

The bass has been setup with a set of flat wound strings and it comes complete with modern Hofner fitted case. The price we have set reflects the non-original parts and is a superb opportunity to get this classic vintage archtop bass guitar at a great price.
