1962 Hofner 172 - Cream Vinyl
Along with the single pickup 171 and three pickup 173 models, the 172 was Hofner's first attempt at building solid guitars with a built-in vibrato tailpiece. However, unlike the Fender Stratocaster, which would have been the inspiration for such a concept, the 171/2/3 range initially had "set-necks" rather than the "bolt-on" type. This 1962 Hofner 172 is the 2 nd version of the 172 model, with a bolt-on neck but still with the old Hofner consul type electrics - only produced for a short time in ’62 with this panel before Hofner moved to rotary controls – and the diamond logo Hofner pickups.
The guitar is finished in a cool cream vinyl with black piping, which looks great along with the black scratch plate and black finished neck. The guitar looks to be all original (including the ever elusive tremolo arm) with the exception of the bridge. Condition is really good with only a couple of very small marks to the vinyl and some wear to the top of the headstock and neck to show for its 63+ years (see last 4 pictures). The guitar still plays and sounds great, we really love these diamond logo pickups, and it comes complete with its original fibreboard case.
