1971 Gibson Southern Jumbo Deluxe
Gibson introduced the Southern Jumbo also known as the Southerner Jumbo, or SJ guitar, in 1942, as a more "deluxe" version of its popular but plain J-45 model. The Southern Jumbo (SJ) Deluxe was a Norlin-era rebranding of the original Southern Jumbo, which technically ended production in 1969. The model retained the square shoulder Dreadnought body, with a solid Spruce top, Mahogany back/sides/neck and a bound Rosewood fingerboard with block inlays. The earliest specimens from 1970 - 1971 with non-adjustable saddles are extremely sought after and command a significant premium over later models.
This 1971 Sunburst model has been well played – definitely a player grade example – there is heavy pick wear to both side of the sound hole and lots of small marks and dings to the top, back and sides (see last 11 pictures). The frets and fret board however are still in great shape. The action is spot on as we have carried out a neck reset and fret level – guitar good to go for another 55+ years. Comes complete with its original purple lined Gibson hard case.
