1976 Gibson Les Paul Custom
The Les Paul Custom was first introduced in 1953 as an upscale version of the Les Paul model. The Custom model was requested by Les Paul himself, who wanted a black version of the Les Paul guitar that “looked like a tuxedo.”
During the 1970s, production of the Les Paul Custom transitioned from Kalamazoo to Nashville, and the Les Paul Custom received various changes that further refined the model, including a multi-piece maple top that replaced the original all-mahogany-body construction along with a new maple neck. The body is bound with 5-ply top binding and 3-ply back binding. The maple neck has a 70s volute and is topped with a bound ebony fretboard with 22 medium jumbo frets and mother-of-pearl block inlays. The bound headstock is also adorned with mother-of-pearl in the form of the famous Custom Split Diamond mother-of-pearl headstock inlay, which originated with the Gibson Super 400 and has become synonymous with the Les Paul Custom.
This 1976 Ebony finished Les Paul Custom has clearly been well played over the years. It has had a refret (frets and fretboard are in great condition but no fret nibs) and the body has many small marks, scratches and dings to the top, back and sides. The “T-Top” humbuckers have been replaced at some point in the past with a pair of Gibson Pat Number humbuckers and the pots have also been replaced with a full set of Norlin era 1979 dated CTS pots, and a Gotoh bridge. The rest of the hardware is original to the guitar including the Gibson logo tuners and Witch Hat control knobs.
The guitar has been setup with a new set of Pure Blues 10s with nice low action – the guitar comes complete with a modern faux leather fitted hard case.
