1938 Kalamazoo KG-14
Kalamazoo branded guitars were made by Gibson in the Kalamazoo, Michigan factory from 1932 to 1942. This fantastic looking example is a KG-14, manufactured in 1938. It is an L-00 sized flattop acoustic with a solid spruce top and solid mahogany back and sides. The mahogany neck has a medium-sized V-shaped neck profile with a 24 ¾“ scale, 12” radius Rosewood fretboard. The ladder bracing (compared to an x-braced L-00) means a less-creamy top and bottom end and an emphasis on lots of snap and punch in the mids. This is ideal for fingerpickers but will also suit flatpickers who need a bit of cut and definition.
As can be seen in the pictures the guitar is in fantastic condition, with the fire stripe guard and perfect bluesy sunburst this guitar has “that look”. The guitar has either been extremely well preserved or extremely well restored. We are erring on the side of preservation – the guitar has no cracks, splits or repairs and the inside of the guitar is as clean as the outside. The pins and saddle look like replacements but the original machine heads are present. There is a small mark to the top, a small scratch to the side and some small marks to the shoulder (see last 3 pictures). The guitar comes complete with a period correct fibreboard hard case which is also in really good condition, clearly doing a great job of protecting this guitar over the past 87+ years.
A superb example of this classic blues acoustic guitar.
