1956 Gibson ETG-150 Tenor Guitar
1956 Gibson ETG-150 – electric archtop tenor guitar - this is a rare archtop guitar in quite stunning all original condition.
Based on the pioneering Gibson ES-150, the ETG-150 was introduced in 1937 and remained in production until 1971. The ETG-150 has the same 16” archtop body as the ES-150 but with a slim, fast, low action single piece mahogany tenor neck with adjustable truss rod. It has an arched Maple to and back with mahogany sides and ivoroid bindings, and a lovely Rosewood fretboard with pearloid dot inlays. The powerful 4 pole P90 pickup (a P60?) with separate tone and volume controls that provides a superbly clear, clean tenor tone. The guitar is finished off with a floating Rosewood adjustable bridge, nickel plated tail piece, Kluson tuners and a 4 ply scratch plate.
The guitar is 100% original and is in superb condition – this guitar has been well cared for over its 69 years. It does have some minor marks on the body and a small loss of finish to the top of the headstock but overall you would not believe that this guitar is almost 70 years old. Inside the body we have one stamp showing ETG-150 and a second stamp with FON (Factory Order Number) of V4838-2. This FON combined with the pot codes confirm the manufacture date of 1956.
The guitar has a new set of Clifford Essex tenor guitar strings on board and is tuned to the traditional CGDA - The guitar comes complete with modern hard shell case.
Most notable player of the Gibson ETG-150 was American jazz and R&B guitarist “Tiny” Grimes – well worth checking out what this guy could do with a tenor guitar.
