1958 Gibson ES-175D
With a fully hollow body and sharp Florentine cutaway, the Gibson ES-175 stands out as an all-time iconic jazz guitar. The ES-175D was first produced in 1953 and has seen some variation over the years, with different pickup and hardware configurations coming in and out of the Gibson line-up, with the D model number indicating the guitar has two pickups. Although the ES-175 is best known as a jazz guitar, it has also been embraced by rock players like Yes' Steve Howe who has a signature model.
The ES-175 has a maple laminated top, back and sides, 3.375” (8.57 cm) deep and 16.25” (41.3 cm) wide across the lower bout. The mahogany set neck has and Brazilian Rosewood fretboard with double parallelogram inlays and the headstock featuring inlays of the Gibson logo and 'crown'.
This 1958 model is in really good condition and has its original finish to both neck and body. The neck has fantastic, smooth play wear to almost the entire length, showing this guitar has been well played over the years, with the guitar also having had a refret. The body and headstock does have some small dings and marks (see last 4 pictures) but generally is in superb condition for its age. The guitar also has the original Brazilian Rosewood bridge, tail piece and scratch plate. Like (too) many vintage Gibson archtops the original PAF humbucker pickups, tuners, knobs and electrics harness have been previously removed – probably to create yet another “fully original” ’58 Les Paul. However, the previous owner has done an excellent job of sourcing and installing worthy replacements with very early Seymour Duncan PAF Antiquities, Area 59 Vintage Clone True Vintage Taper (TVT) 550K pots with Russian Paper in Oil Capacitors, Area 59 Vintage Clone Gold Bonnet knobs (made from correct materials and indistinguishable from originals), Area 59 Vintage Clone Aged and Area 59 Vintage Clone high quality heavy Aged Kluson tuners – the result is a 67 year old Gibson archtop that is back to looking, playing and sounding its absolute best.
The guitar comes complete with a slightly oversized 1960s purple lined Gibson hard case (probably for a J-200).
We have set the price that reflects the replacement electrics and hardware, giving an affordable classic vintage Gibson that just can’t be matched by modern Custom Shop models.
