Product Details

EKO was founded in 1959 by Oliviero Pigini and stands out as one of the more creative and exciting guitar makers of the 1960s. In the early 1960s, faced with the immense popularity of the Beatles, many musicians adopted the group's guitars, in particular Paul McCartney's violin shaped bass. EKO, like so many manufacturers, tried to reproduce this bass in their own way.

The very first violin shaped electric bass guitar was the solid bodied EB-1, released by Gibson in 1953. In 1956 Höfner introduced its hollow bodied 500/1, then, Eko produced this 1150 model from 1962-64. It is indeed a rare beast with less than 300 made before it was replaced by the EKO 995 series at the end of 1964.

Entirely original, here is a really great example of the Eko 1150 from the 1960s. It has a lovely woodgrain finish to the top and a highly figured woodgrain plastic coating (as used with accordions) makes for a distinctive finish to the back and neck. The “Ultra Slim” 30” scale neck has a Rosewood fretboard with 20 frets - 21 if you include the zero fret. The 2 Powerful Double Polarity Magnetic Bass Pickups controlled by accordion-type push buttons, as is very common to see on the different EKO models from this period.

The bass is in fantastic condition with only some very light marks on the body to show for its 62+ years of play. The bass comes complete with a Yamaha branded hard case which is perfect for the bass.
