1968 Epiphone FT90 El Dorado
The Epiphone FT-90 El Dorado, produced from 1963 to 1969, is a rare and somewhat obscure model that stands as a slightly upscale sibling to the well-known Epiphone Texan. With a Spruce top, Mahogany back and sides and its Mahogany neck with Rosewood fretboard the early retail price of $220 positioned the El Dorado above the Texan in Epiphone's lineup. The FT90 is a square-shouldered Dreadnought bodied guitar that was a close relative to Gibson's Hummingbird model, although, unlike the Hummingbird, it was built with a long 25.4” scale. The El Dorado remained largely unchanged throughout its production and features the narrower nut commonly found on 1966-1969 Gibsons. Its distinctive design, superb sound and limited production make it a sought-after piece among vintage acoustic collectors.
This 1968 model is very much a Players Grade example which we have reflected in the very reasonable price. In addition to the many small marks, dings and play wear on the body and neck (see last 7 pictures) it also has 2 historical repairs – one small repair to the bass side of the top and the 2 nd being a professionally completed neck repair (see picture 8). The frets and fretboard are in superb condition and the guitar does still have its original Kluson Deluxe tuners, adjustable bridge and screw down scratch plate. The guitar also comes complete with its original Virginia Luggage Co. case which still has all its latches, however handle has broken on one side.
