The Ovation company is best known for its oval back acoustic guitars, although they did produce some fantastic electric solid body electric guitar models in the early 1970s with the UKII, Preacher, Viper, Breadwinner and the Deacon. The first three of these were fairly normal in design (albeit with traditional Ovation touches in the shapes), however the Deacon and Breadwinner were very different with the distinctive sculptured shape, which was designed to be both beautiful to look at and comfortable to play.
This 1974 Deacon is in great condition – it features a solid brass self-aligning bridge with ball bearing action tips for easy height adjustment of individual strings. The guitar's electronics include an active FET preamplifier with dual pole, single coil pickups, providing a rich and varied tone. The slim, two-piece, mahogany neck allows for faster fingering, more control, and a high cutaway that extends the playing range to a full two octaves. The guitar's unique pickup selector switch gives for three distinct sounds: the neck pickup for rhythm guitar, the bridge pickup for bright, piercing leads, or both pickups out-of-phase for a funky sound. The guitar does have some marks along the bottom edge, missing a screw on the rear cover plate and has some small filled divots in the fretboard at the first 2 frets, (see last 5 pictures) but overall condition really is great.
The Deacon were often seen in the hands of  Jeff Lynne of the Electric Light Orchestra, Steve Marriott and occasionally Ace Frehley of KISS - a work of art that is designed to make music – comes complete with a generic rectangular period flight case.
